New Found Glory: “Dressed to Kill”. This song was sooo good. And the video rocks, too, because Rachel Leigh Cook was in it. I was totally obsessed with her around the time this single was released.
The Prodigy: “Smack My Bitch Up”. This is by far one of the coolest music videos ever made, directed by the awesome Swedish guy who did Spun, no less. Luke, you need to watch this already!
Star Fucking Hipsters: “Two Cups of Tea”. This song is sooo good. One of the catchiest songs that involve dead cops you’ll ever hear, for sure. Fashion punx make me sick, so the music video is pretty lame, but the band is still good.
Lyrics:
Two cups of tea
One for you and one for me
Drown out the pan from polluted acid rain
And flaming gasoline, until we’re clean
Two dead police
One for hope and one for peace
Watching government lies
Leak into your empty eyes
From the TV and winners history
Three dead police
One for thanks and two for please
In every single town, every officer is down
All dead police, all dead police
Fair-weather friend, it’s on you I do depend
All the mountains we climb
Crumble into sands of time
No mail to send, to fair-weather friend
Anxiety, another gift from you to me
And so everything fails
My bleeding bitten fingernails
Sore as can be, anxiety
If it was up to me, I would restart history
Ignite the flame and burn the centuries of blame
The bloodstained centuries, these bloody centuries
Fair-weather friend, it’s on you I do depend
All the mountains we climb,
Crumble into sands of time
No mail to send, to fair-weather friend
Anxiety, another gift from you to me
Everything fails,
My bleeding bitten fingernails
Sore as can be, anxiety
And in the dawn, I’ll see that you have gone
And on that blood soaked bed
I’ll lay down my weary head
And hum along to this fucking song
One cup of tea, not enough for company
Maybe tomorrow you will let me borrow
Another cup of tea, another cup of tea
And your company, and your company
Goldfinger: “Open Your Eyes”. This song gets me so pumped, even more so than it did when I first heard it as an angsty, pseudo-politically-charged teenager. It’s so fucking awesome when John Feldmann shows his guitar to the camera and it says ‘vegan’ on it.
Lyrics:
Open your eyes to the millions of lies that they tell you everyday
Open your mind to the clever disguise that the advertisements say
How do they know what’s good for you?
Wake up, wake up, whoa
Wake up, wake up, whoa
A shot to the head
They’re better off dead
Will you wake up, wake up, whoa
Destroy all the land and kill what you can just to make the profits rise
Sell you from birth for all that you’re worth, the money spreads like lies
And how do they know what’s good for you?
Wake up, wake up, whoa
Wake up, wake up, whoa
A shot to the head
They’re better off dead
Will you wake up, wake up, whoa
Don’t wanna hate you
Don’t wanna blame it all on you
I’m out of options
If you don’t look, I’ll force you to
If you don’t look, I’ll force you to
If you don’t look, I’ll force you to
Wake up, wake up, whoa
Wake up, wake up, whoa
A shot to the head
Just so you can be fed
Will you wake up, wake up, whoa
NOFX: “The Idiots Are Taking Over”. This is one of my favorite songs of all time. The lyrics are the greatest.
Lyrics:
It’s not the right time to be sober
Now the idiots have taken over
Spreading like a social cancer, is there an answer?
Mensa membership conceding
Tell me why and how are all the stupid people breeding
Watson, it’s really elementary
The industrial revolution
Has flipped the bitch on evolution
The benevolent and wise are being thwarted, ostracized, what a bummer
The world keeps getting dumber
Insensitivity is standard
And faith is being fancied over reason
Darwin’s rolling over in his coffin
The fittest are surviving much less often
Now everything seems to be reversing, and it’s worsening
Someone flopped a steamer in the gene pool
Now angry mob mentality’s no longer the exception, it’s the rule
And I’m starting to feel a lot like Charlton Heston
Stranded on a primate planet
Apes and orangutans that ran it to the ground
With generals and the armies that obeyed them
Followers following fables
Philosophies that enable them to rule without regard
There’s no point for democracy when ignorance is celebrated
Political scientists get the same one vote as some Arkansas inbred
Majority rule don’t work in mental institutions
Sometimes the smallest softest voice carries the grand biggest solutions
What are we left with?
A nation of god-fearing pregnant nationalists
Who feel it’s their duty to populate the homeland
Pass on traditions
How-to-get-ahead religions
And prosperity via simpleton culture
The idiots are taking over
The idiots are taking over
The idiots are taking over
The idiots are taking over
The idiots are taking over
The idiots are taking over
The idiots are taking over
The idiots are taking over
Goldfinger: “Free Me”. I remember way back in the day when I first stopped eating meat, I heard this song and wanted to cry. It’s still so good and I think I might want to get back into Goldfinger.
The Gaslight Anthem: “Great Expectations”. Yeah, this song. :(
Everybody leaves and I’d expect as much from you
I saw tail lights last night in a dream about my old life
Everybody leaves, so why, why wouldn’t you?
“Story from North America” by by Garrett Davis and Kirsten Lepore. This animated music video for a strange acoustic song about a father telling his son why he shouldn’t squish spiders is totally bizarre, but extremely cute in a truthful and weird way. I’m not really sure what the fuck I just watched, but I feel enlightened.
