Mao Sugiyama, a self-described “asexual” from Tokyo, cooked up, seasoned and served his own genitalia to five diners at a swanky banquet in Japan last month, Calorie Lab reported.

In most cases, “asexual” is a word used to describe a person who is non-sexual. Sugiyama, however, embraces it as a way to show that he does not affiliate with either gender.

Sugiyama sparked a firestorm of interest on April 8 with one tweet:

“[Please retweet] I am offering my male genitals (full penis, testes, scrotum) as a meal for 100,000 yen …Will prepare and cook as the buyer requests, at his chosen location.”

Just days after Sugiyama’s 22nd birthday, the artist underwent elective genital-removal surgery, divvied up the severed penis shaft, testicles, and scrotal skin between five people, and garnished it with button mushrooms and Italian parsley.

On April 13, five of six diners who signed up for the $250-a-plate feast, sat down to dinner. The sixth person was a no-show.

The next day, an organizer posted a blog — subsequently deleted — containing pictures of the event. Images showed dozens of people who attended the event just to catch a glimpse of the rare treat.

The extra diners were served crocodile-based dishes while Sugiyama cooked up the exclusive meal.

The story went viral in Japan. Some showed even more interest, while others complained. But Calorie Lab called Japanese authorities, who deemed the banquet legal because there is no law against cannibalism in the country.

Patriarchy is everyone’s fault.
I am choosing to not live by their standards anymore.

- I am choosing to no longer “see” race and ethnicity in my personal life and decisions, but am still going to acknowledge and fight against racism.

- I am choosing to no longer “see” gender in my personal life and decisions, but am still going to acknowledge and fight against sexism.

- I am choosing to no longer “see” orientation and sexuality in my personal life and decisions, but am still going to acknowledge and fight against homophobia, heterophobia, transphobia, and slut-shaming.

Just because we still live in a society and institution that segregates us by arbitrary labels and dinstinctions does not mean that we must continue to do the same in our everyday lives, communities, and cultures. It is the choice to perpetuate the significance of these otherwise meaningless things that maintains the prejudice and bigotry based on them.

As an individual who both acknowledges prejudice and oppression and no longer wants to play a role in it, I am choosing to see everyone as human. Our different upbringings, histories, ancestries, experiences, and lifestyles say nothing about our cores or what we are capable of as individuals. To suggest that our skin colors, anatomies, or sexual preferences are indicative of anything is the very foundation of ignorance-based discrimination. No one’s suffering is more important than another’s.

For anything to change, we must learn how to unite and join hands as one species who are all in this fight together. The differences in our personal struggles is irrelevant, because we are all ultimately enslaved by capitalism, government, and plutocracy.

Again, it is a natural, biological occurrence. I didn’t bring it into the equation for the sake of my argument. I don’t believe it plays any role in the ultimate identity of the individual and from what I’ve read and the experiences I’ve heard about, it winds up becoming, once again, which gender role they prefer to exclusively follow.

if you see gender as 'strictly anatomical' then what's your opinion of the trans* community? considering they may be 'anatomically male or female' but identify as the opposite?
Anonymous

Well, I have very mixed feelings about it still.

I am obviously not going to stand up and tell someone they can’t say they’re this or that. As I’ve said, I see race, gender, orientation, et cetera, as arbitrary distinctions that mostly only serve to segregate us, so I’m certainly not going to try and dictate what one can or cannot be, as it is just not that important to me what is between someone’s legs or not. I am supportive of the trans community, specifically of those who are courageously taking on the transition to their preferred gender. I am not opposing any particular community or individual interpretations of gender and identity, just stating my personal way of interpreting it.

The part that bothers me most about when we begin to look at gender outside the realm of biology is that if oftentimes winds up reinforcing the gender binary and the roles that come with it.

For example: Let’s say someone who is a biological male or female decides that they now “identify” as a female or male, but has no intentions of getting gender reassignment surgery. What is left that makes them a female? Well, it appears that their “preferred pronoun” and, more often than not, their wardrobe are all that’s there to signify it. So now we must ask: What “makes” a man/woman? It seems to me that the implication is that there is a standard by which a man is a man and a woman is a woman, and that said standard actually is the one that we have been taught our whole lives through pre-assigned gender roles and the overly simplistic gender binary.

My problem with this is not that the individual feels more or less what their anatomy technically makes them, but that the way they go about changing identities seems to always adhere to and thus reaffirm the standards and stereotypes that our traditional gender roles are composed of. That offends me to a degree because I believe we should be overcoming any and all self-fulfilling generalizations assigned to us based on our anatomies, skin colors, and sexual desires.

It is my personal opinion that (and I saw this on an image posted via Tumblr one time) identity is in the brain, orientation is in the heart, and gender is between the legs. From where I’m currently standing, it seems less productive to try and redefine or reclaim gender than it would be to abolish the roles, standards, and generalizations we have socially assigned them. For example: If an individual with a penis wants to wear pink, makeup, a dress, or whatever, then they should be able to; the only thing stopping them is gender roles and standards, not the fact that they aren’t “female”.

I truly believe that people can and will be born into what they feel were the “wrong bodies”, and I respect that and whatever they choose to do to deal with it, don’t get me wrong. But I’m not sure what it means exactly when someone on Tumblr posts a thing that says, “Some men have vaginas, get over it!” considering a penis biologically signifies the animal male and the only other way one could technically be “female” otherwise is by adopting the typical standards and roles society has given to females.

I hope this makes sense to some of you. I’m still trying to figure it out and I’n having difficulty with reconciling biology with social politics. Perhaps I am overlooking something and am being ignorant; I wouldn’t be surprised and I welcome anyone to give me feedback or try to educate me better about this. I’d really appreciate it, in fact.

I say ‘whatever your insecurities are’ because, as we very well know, sometimes our first instinct is to want to hit a homosexual in the mouth and want a woman to be quiet. We want to hit a homosexual in the mouth because we are afraid that we might be homosexual; and we want to hit the woman or shut her up because we are afraid that she might castrate us or take the nuts that we might not have to start with.
